Compilation of Stratigraphic Lexicon for standardization of stratigraphic terminology, was initiated in the Field Season 1989-90, with an objective to compile and synthesis up-to-date data on various stratigraphic units of Northern Region. The data on Palaeozoic, Mesozoic and Tertiary sequences of Tethyan belt, NW Himalaya has been compiled and synthesized in the earlier field seasons. In continuation to that, the work on Lesser and Outer Himalayan sequences was taken up in in Field Season 1993-94. The latest published data pertaining to litho-bio as well as chronostratigraphic aspects was also taken into consideration. The book in its present form, however has been modified by the current editors, and the lithostratigraphy has been classified as per the Unified Legend, 2017 of GSI. Geological maps have also been prepared and appended for the reference.
