Geology and Evolution of Nagaur-Ganganagar Basin with Special Reference to Salt and Potash Mineralisation

Virendra Kumar (Compiler) Ram Chandra (Compiler) Special Publication Series
Synopsis

The Western Region of Geological Survey of India is presenting through this publication surface and subsurface geological set-up of the area to the west of aravalli range. Ana area covering more than 50,000 km2 was investigated through drilling involving 58,945 m of drilling in 69 boreholes for exploration of potash, a fertilizer mineral, besides developing the geological set-up. This project started in the year 1974 and continued till 1991.

During the course of investigations the rock salt resources of 6 trillion tonnes and potash 2,476.58 million tonnes have been identified. The stratigraphic set-up has also revealed the presence of 'oil-shale' associated with the Bilara Group and the Hanseran Evaporite Group. The area presents significant clues for reconstruction times. It also, revealed the presence of thick evaporite sequence in the Western part of Rajasthan, which has continuity in subsurface up to Salt Range in Pakistan. The geochronological sequence. The geochemical study undertaken largely of the Hanseran evaporite Group has given detailed account of the sedimentation pattern of different evaporite facies in the Nagaur-Ganganagar basin.

Through this publication, the authors have brought focus towards resources of western parts of Rajasthan, which is generally considered to be monotonous, having sand dunes and small saline lakes only.
