Synopsis

Flora of Thummalapalle Uranium Mining Area in Kadapa and Anantapuramu districts of Andhra Pradesh is the base line floristic study of 30 km radius from the Mining site. A total of 892 taxa belonging to 869 species under 455 genera and 104 families of Angiosperms have been enumerated. Pteridophytes include 14 species under 13 genera and 12 families while Bryophytes include 22 taxa belonging to 21 species under 14 genera and 8 families. Under each family key to the genera followed by the genus with its authority, key to the species, followed by species enumeration is given. The enumeration of the species include the complete citation according to ICN, basionym if any, synonyms to connect to Flora of British India and Flora of Presidency of Madras. It is followed by detailed description, distribution in the 30 km radius, flowering and fruiting period, vernacular name and specimens examined. Local uses of some species have also been provided. References, index to families, genera, species and local names are given at the end. The book is profusely illustrated with 21 plates of colour photographs of 120 plants. This book will be useful to administrators, foresters, botanists, ecologists and scientist who are working on plants as bio-indicators, and also bio-remediation.

About the authors

S. Sandhya Rani

Dr. S. Sandhya Rani did her master degree (1991) with first rank in Botany from Sri Venkatswara University, Tirupati and thereafter obtained her Ph.D (1998) from Sri Krishnadevaraya University, Anantapur, Andhra Pradesh, India. At present she is working as Assistant Professor in the Department of Botany, Sri Krishnadevaraya University, Anantapur. She has 15 years of research experience in Plant Taxonomy and 4 years of teaching experience. Her publications include 46 research papers and 3 books viz., Trees of Andhra Pradesh (1999), Flora of Guntur district (2001) and Flora of Eastern Ghats Volume 4 (2011). She is the Principal Investigator of a Project funded by BRNS, Mumbai and life member of IAAT, IBS and NESA."

T. Pullaiah

Prof. T. Pullaiah obtained his M.Sc., (1973) and Ph.D., (1976) degrees in Botany from Andhra University. He was a Post Doctoral Fellow at Moscow State University, Russia during 1976-78. He traveled widely in Europe and visited Universities and Botanical Gardens in about 16 countries. Professor Pullaiah joined Sri Krishnadevaraya University as a Lecturer in 1979 and became Professor in 1993. At present he is Dean, Faculty of Life Sciences; Head, Department of Botany; Co-ordinator and Chairman BOS in Biotechnology. Professor Pullaiah has published 25 books, 175 research papers and 35 popular articles. His books include Embryology of Compositae; Flora of Andhra Pradesh (4 Vols.); Trees of Andhra Pradesh; Taxonomy of Angiosperms; Flora of Guntur District, Andhra Pradesh, India; Flora of Ranga Reddi District; Flora of Anantapur District; Flora of Kurnool; Flora of Nizamabad; Embryology and Apomixis in Grasses; Flora of Eastern Ghats - Vol.1 and Vol.2; Biodiversity in India - Vol.1; etc. He is principal investigator of 14 major Research Projects totaling more than 70 lakhs funded by DBT, DST, CSIR, DOEF, GCC and WWF. Under his guidance 35 students obtained their Ph.D. degree and 32 students obtained their M. Phil. degree. He is recipient of Best Teacher Award from Government of Andhra Pradesh and receipient of Panchanan Maheshwari Medal of Indian Botanical Society for the year 2002 and Y.D. Tyagi Gold Medal of Indian Association for Angiosperm Taxonomy. He is a Member of International Union for Conservation of Nature and Natural Resources (IUCN).
