Synopsis Eastern Ghats, hill ranges of South East India are located between 11 30 and 22 north latitudes and 76 50 and 86 30 east longitudes. They cover an area of about 75,000 sq. km. The vegetation ranges from moist deciduous forests to scrub jungle and grass lands. In the present volume a total of 330 species belonging to 74 genera of family Leguminosae have been enumerated. The genera under each subfamily and species under each genus are arranged alphabetically. The nomenclature has been brought up to date. Systematic enumeration includes citation detailed description, distribution, flowering and fruiting period, vernacular name and specimens examined. A total of 181 illustrations and 12 plates of 76 photographs have been given. An index to scientific names and vernacular names has been given at the end.

About the authors

T. Pullaiah

Prof. T. Pullaiah obtained his M.Sc., (1973) and Ph.D., (1976) degrees in Botany from Andhra University. He was a Post Doctoral Fellow at Moscow State University, Russia during 1976-78. He traveled widely in Europe and visited Universities and Botanical Gardens in about 16 countries. Professor Pullaiah joined Sri Krishnadevaraya University as a Lecturer in 1979 and became Professor in 1993. At present he is Dean, Faculty of Life Sciences; Head, Department of Botany; Co-ordinator and Chairman BOS in Biotechnology. Professor Pullaiah has published 25 books, 175 research papers and 35 popular articles. His books include Embryology of Compositae; Flora of Andhra Pradesh (4 Vols.); Trees of Andhra Pradesh; Taxonomy of Angiosperms; Flora of Guntur District, Andhra Pradesh, India; Flora of Ranga Reddi District; Flora of Anantapur District; Flora of Kurnool; Flora of Nizamabad; Embryology and Apomixis in Grasses; Flora of Eastern Ghats - Vol.1 and Vol.2; Biodiversity in India - Vol.1; etc. He is principal investigator of 14 major Research Projects totaling more than 70 lakhs funded by DBT, DST, CSIR, DOEF, GCC and WWF. Under his guidance 35 students obtained their Ph.D. degree and 32 students obtained their M. Phil. degree. He is recipient of Best Teacher Award from Government of Andhra Pradesh and receipient of Panchanan Maheshwari Medal of Indian Botanical Society for the year 2002 and Y.D. Tyagi Gold Medal of Indian Association for Angiosperm Taxonomy. He is a Member of International Union for Conservation of Nature and Natural Resources (IUCN).

K. Sri Ramamurthy

Dr. K. Sri Ramamurthy did his masters degree (1994) in Botany from Nagarjuna University and thereafter obtained his Ph.D. (1998) from Sri Krishnadevaraya University. He has published 25 research papers in leading Indian and overseas Journals. His principal interest is in plant Taxonomy and Molecular systematics. He is currently working as Research Associate in DBT Project with the senior author.
