Synopsis The Eastern Ghats, one of the nine floristic zones in India, are located between 11o30’ and 22o N latitude and 76o 50’ and 86o 30’E longitude in a North-East to South-West strike. The Eastern Ghats are spread over three states of India, namely Orissa, Andhra Pradesh and Tamil Nadu. It covers an area of about 75, 000 sq. km. with an average width of 200 km. in the north and 100 km. in the south. They extendover a length of 1750 km. between the rivers Mahanadi and Vaigainal along East Coast. Topography and general features, present work and vegetation types are given in the beginning. The next part includes systematic enumeration where the families have been arranged according to Bentham and Hooker’s system with incorporation of recent changes. Under each family key to the genera, followed by the genus with its authority, keys to the species and species enumeration is given. The genera under the family and species under the genus are arranged in alphabetical sequence. Keys are of the indented type. The enumeration of species includes citation according to ICBN, basionym and synonym if any, description, distribution in the Eastern Ghats, flowering and fruiting period, vernacular names, specimens examined and distribution in India and world. Bibliography, index to families, genera and species are given at the end.

About the authors

D. Muralidhara Rao

Mr. D. Muralidhara Rao did his M.Sc., (1996) from Sri Venkateswara University, Tirupati. He did his M.Phil., (1998) from sri Krishnadevaraya University and worked as Teaching Assistant (1998-99) in the Department of Botany, sri Krishnadevaraya University. He has published two papers. He is now working as Senior Research Fellow in DST Project with the Senior Author.

T. Pullaiah

Prof. T. Pullaiah obtained his M.Sc., (1973) and Ph.D., (1976) degrees in Botany from Andhra University. He was a Post Doctoral Fellow at Moscow State University, Russia during 1976-78. He traveled widely in Europe and visited Universities and Botanical Gardens in about 16 countries. Professor Pullaiah joined Sri Krishnadevaraya University as a Lecturer in 1979 and became Professor in 1993. At present he is Dean, Faculty of Life Sciences; Head, Department of Botany; Co-ordinator and Chairman BOS in Biotechnology. Professor Pullaiah has published 25 books, 175 research papers and 35 popular articles. His books include Embryology of Compositae; Flora of Andhra Pradesh (4 Vols.); Trees of Andhra Pradesh; Taxonomy of Angiosperms; Flora of Guntur District, Andhra Pradesh, India; Flora of Ranga Reddi District; Flora of Anantapur District; Flora of Kurnool; Flora of Nizamabad; Embryology and Apomixis in Grasses; Flora of Eastern Ghats - Vol.1 and Vol.2; Biodiversity in India - Vol.1; etc. He is principal investigator of 14 major Research Projects totaling more than 70 lakhs funded by DBT, DST, CSIR, DOEF, GCC and WWF. Under his guidance 35 students obtained their Ph.D. degree and 32 students obtained their M. Phil. degree. He is recipient of Best Teacher Award from Government of Andhra Pradesh and receipient of Panchanan Maheshwari Medal of Indian Botanical Society for the year 2002 and Y.D. Tyagi Gold Medal of Indian Association for Angiosperm Taxonomy. He is a Member of International Union for Conservation of Nature and Natural Resources (IUCN).
