Greening at the Grassroots: Alternative Forestry Strategies in India
Synopsis
"In contrast to official programs, the author demonstrates that the voluntary sector in India is strategically placed to play a catalytic role in reclaiming indigenous concepts of subsistence forestry. Ms. Robinson presents case studies of three voluntary groups in Andhra Pradesh and identifies the factors for their success. Among these are that their organizational cultures engender more participatory, interactive and empowering relationships with villagers and provide a context in which forestry practices emerge out of local knowledge . The result, as the author shows, is an integrated view of forestry as part of the rural ecology which is embedded in the social, economic and political values of the rural people."
