Geology of Himachal Pradesh

O.N. Bhargava (Author) S.V. Srikantia (Author)
Synopsis Himachal Pradesh forms an important segment of the Himalaya where pioneering geological investigations were carried out in the late 1800 and early 1900 by H.B. Medlicott, H.H. Hayden, G.E. Pilgrim, W.D. West and J.B. Auden. These investigations though confined to limited sectors laid the foundation for subsequent studies in Himalayan geology. The Second World War shifted emphasis from mapping to mineral investigations. After India became independent, there was no immediate change in policy until the early sixties when geological mapping again received emphasis and the Geological Survey of India decided on a systematic coverage of the entire Indian Himalaya. For more than two decades, beltwise systematic mapping of various structural belts on 1:63,360 or 1:50,000 scales based on lithostratigraphy was carried out by us. There were several collaborative efforts with others in this exciting venture. It was a period of great expectations and every field season provided us with newer challenges, excitement and a sense of achievement. Over a period, our investigations succeeded in providing some answers to several questions of correlation and structure. We were each other's critics and that left us no room for complacency. Much of our doubts were sorted out in the field by strike-mapping. We looked for new facts, fresh ideas, subjected ourselves to severe introspection and did not hesitate to demolish our earlier held views in the light of new evidences.
