Jamali's Persian Siyar-Ul-'Arifin: Biographies of Mystics

Ishrat Husain Ansari (Translator) Hamid Afaq Qureshi Al-Taimi Al-Siddiqi (Translator) IDA Religio-Philosophy (Original) Series
Synopsis

The present book is an English translation of a classical Pesian work on the Sufis of India of Hamid b Dazlullah Jamail entitled Siyar-ul-'Arifin based on its Manuscript preserved in the Library of the Nadwatul Ulema, Lucknow and its comparative study with the Urdu translation of this work published by Muhammad Ayyub Qadri. It is not only an extensively quoted work but also one of the works which has basically been utilised by most of the later writers writing on Sufism. Like all other Sufi works it is mainly a book of the Fazail genre and carries all the hallmarks of such a works. Besides the Mystics mentioned by him during the course of the text, he exclusively devotes spaces for 6 spiritual guides of the Chishtiya chain of dissemination and seven that of the Suharwardiya chain of dissemination ie. The lives of 'Abdullah Hamid and his spiritual mentor, both of whom were Kambos, about whom we read a lot in History, show as to how an upwad mobiization of a particuar tribe or caste took place in the societies of those days due to literary or spiritual or both acquisitions when piety alone eclipses all that was before but then etymological fancies to hit upon this fact are also confronted by us in the literature of that time and the same is true of the Kanbos too.
