Mass Movement and National Upsurge: 1920-1925

R Kumar (Author) S Ram (Author)
Synopsis The volume four is most significant in the annals of our-sub-continent. The tragedy at Amritsar, in Jallianwala Bagh, was taken up seriously along with the reaction of the people with regard to the Rowlatt Bills. It was decided to launch an All-India Movement, of course, with the well-known disciplined Non-Violent Technique. The Non-Cooperation Movement was spear-headed by prominent Congress leaders, of course, under the leadership of Mahatma Gandhi. It was based on boycott of schools, colleges and councils and put into practice the propagation of Swadeshi and picketing. The role of women was a glaring phenomenon in this All-India Struggle. C.R. Das and Motilal Nehru differed with the Gandhian Programme of the boycott of councils and it led to the foundation of the Swarajya Party. The role of Sarojini Naidu was indeed very significant. The theme has been divided into twenty chapters covering the complex political events of 1920s. The mass upsurge was an eye-opener for the Raj and prominent members of the Lahore Party in the House of Commons gave vent to their feelings in favour of Indian sentiments and pathway to Swaraj. The rule of Maulana Azad as Congress President has been highlighted along with Ali brothers who propagated the ideology of Mahatma Gandhi. Indeed these events made the people realise that something unique would be achieved under the leadership of Mahatma Gandhi. The Non-Violent Satyagraha was the main technique to the followed by millions of people in North, South, West, East and Central India.
