Problems of Women's Marriage and Violence
Synopsis
This book "Problems of Women’s Marriage and Violence" discusses myriad aspects of social and domestic violence against women. The enslavement of women and ‘controlling’ them continues unabated even in this 21 century. Female foeticide, discriminatory treatment meted out to girls at home, and the husband’s and his family’s efforts to ‘control’ the newly wed bride by various ‘inhuman’ methods are prevalent in a wider section of the society. Dowry-demand, ill-treatment to widows and divorcee women, harassment, and occassional reporting of acid throwing, inhuman killing of girls/women occur in society. Even law enforcing agencies find themselves unable to do anything to help the suffering women. This book is divided in to eight chapters. The first chapter discusses the problems of gender equality. Various agencies working for women’s liberation, feminist groups and efforts by government to provide equal opportunities to women are discussed in this chapter. The second chapter is on women and reproduction. The third chapter is on the family and child care. The fourth chapter touches the problem of women and sexual violence. The fifth chapter discusses the institution of marriage and the motherhood is the subject of sixth chapter. The seventh chapter treats the problems of feminism and the eighth and the last chapter is about women and concept of self. It is hoped that the book will prove useful to feminists, women’s activists, sociologists and academic researchers.
