Reconstructing South Asia An Agenda

Adluri Subramanyam Raju (Editor)
Synopsis South Asia is one of the important regions in international system. Like other regions, a number of steps have been initiated to promote greater understanding and cooperation among the member states of the region. The region is afflicted by a number of problems -social, political and economic. Nuclear proliferation is one of the major issues that changed the face of the region. In this context, an attempt is made to construct a new South Asia by exploring the problems of the region and to suggest ways and means to have a new future for the people of south Asia. As a [art of this effort the volume tries to deal with a few new issues that can give a new agenda to change the present scenario. The volume consists essays contributed by the scholars across the South Asian region. They include former policy makers such as diplomatic and military personnel, academia, media and the corporate world. This volume adopts a new strategy discussing the issues from the people centric perspective. The volume tries to focus on South Asia beyond nationalism, the necessity of new institutional choices, an agenda for peace and security issues, including common defence area, having a South Asian Union and a single currency for the region. Addressing the above issues, the volume gives a fresh perspective on the field by probing into Why we need a South Asian Union? What are the steps to be followed? What are the obstacles for forgoing cooperation? Whether the contemporary approach towards political and security cooperation needs to be modified? It makes recommendations for reconstructing South Asia with the focus not just economic but also human development.
