H.L. Shukla

H.L. Shukla (b. 1939) has created, and for forty years he has dominated the field of Indology and modern linguistics. Professor H.L. Shukla, throughout position-holder and goldmedalist with double Ph.D. and D.Litt., is a brilliant luminary in the firmament of Indology. His valuable contributions to the various aspects of Indology, Ethno-history, Ethno-linguistics, Ethnic Literature, Ethno-music, Ethno-semiotics, Diatectology, Dictionary and Literary criticism in particular, now covering more than thirty years, are too well-known to need any introduction. His grounding in the Sanskrit learning with the command on tribal languages through modern linguistics enabled him to delve deeper in the interpretation of Indian culture and translation of Ramayana in the tribal languages. His history of Bastar in seven volumes has opened new chapter in Indian history. Professor Shukla has till now completed several research projects, published 44 books and over hundreds of research papers in Indian and foreign journals. As an editor of two research Journals (Psycholingua and Multilingua, 1970-), he produced hundred of scholars. His books have been widely reviewed and quoted in international and national Journals, books, seminars, conferences, etc. he has guided 34 research scholars for Ph.D. and D.Litt. and has been the member of more than fifty academic bodies. He founded the Department of Comparative Language and Culture in 19880 and has so far produced hundreds of scholars in M.A. Sanskrit, Prakrit and Linguistics, M.Phil. comparative Linguistics, P.G. Diploma in Linguistics and Tribal Languages. Formerly he was Professor-cum-Director of the Institute of Correspondence Courses, Bhopal University, Bhopal.
