Thesaurus of Kalidasa (In 2 Volumes)

H.L. Shukla (Author)
Synopsis The book Kalidasa Kosha (Thesaurus of Kalidasa) is intended to give an accurate picture of Kalidasa. The total number of Sanskrit pada (words) entries included in the works of Kalidasa is 25,604. The Author discuses the ways in which each age rediscovers Kalidasa to suit its own ends. As the author follows the history of commentaries, adaptations, editions and interpretations, from Dandi to Anandavardhana, from Vallabhadeva to Kalyamalla and the treatment of the plays in dance and music, he poses a fundamental problem – if every period can invoke Kalidasa in support of diverse values, then what does constitute his “greatness”? Kalidasa Kosha (Thesaurus of Kalidasa) is not only a comprehensive re-evaluation of Kalidasa’s changing reputation, but a work which challenges the very grounds of literary and lexicological judgements.
