Women in Law & Politics

Romila Pruthi (Editor) Raj Kumar Pruthi (Editor) Rameshwari Devi (Editor)
Synopsis "Women down the ages have always had to demand equal status for themselves in society. This is more so in a traditional set-up like India, where women have forever been a step behind men in deference to the "higher status" of man. The book 'Women in Law & Politics' specifically charts the progress of women, through their trials and tribulations, in their difficult journey demanding equal status in this male-dominated society. This book examines the legal status of women vis-?-vis marriage, laws relating to adoption, divorce, uniform civil code, etc. In their relentless struggle for equality, women have always had to light an uphill battle. Most laws are male-centric, disregarding completely the fact that women form an integral fifty per cent of the nation. Clamouring for attention based on this reality, women are endeavouring to change the millenia-old mindset of male supremacy. Women's place in the political sphere of activity of the country plays a critical role in establishing their importance or otherwise in the other spheres of life. This outstanding book details the struggles, the oppositions faced, and the victories of the women in their relentless fight for equality. This book will be of tremendous interactive value to all scholars, teachers, social activists, women's associations, sociologists, policy-makers and all those who are genuinely concerned for the upliftment of women in our society."
