Synopsis Rural Development is a matter of interest for the academics, development professionals, administrators, non-governmental organizations and also donors. In India, considerable efforts have been made in the form of various strategies and through programmes for the sustainable rural development. The experiments in this field also include, a shift in the focus, approach, design of intervention and organizational framework to initiate and sustain the development and welfare activities for rural communities. During five development decades, we have experimented and also gained experience in the field or rural development that has enlightened us to dream, design and development our rural communities on sustainable process. In this process, people are enabled to have access and effective participation in development as well in welfare activities. Both governmental and non-governmental efforts are aiming at the people and area to initiate a self-sustained and people-centred development. We have attempted to document experiments made in development process through that gained rich experience in the process of initiating and managing sustainable rural development and its positive consequences on the people’s life in the rural communities.

About the authors

R. Venkata Ravi

R. Venkata Ravi, M.A. Ph. D. is working as Associate Follow in the RBI Chair at the Council for Social Development, Southern Regional Office, Hyderabad, India. He is a Development Researcher with specialization in the Rural Development. He has published about 15 papers on various aspects of the Rural Development in reputed National and International journals. As Project Officer and Consultant, he has associated with the State Governments of Andhra Pradesh and Tamil.

D. Sunder Raj

D. Sunder Raj, (Ph.D) in Economics, is working as a Faculty in the Council for Social Development, Hyderabad. He is involved in various projects and training programmes of the Council. He has published number of articles in the reputed Research Journals and also contributed to many edited Books. Currently, he is working on issues like People’s participation, Women Empowerment.

P. Siva Ram

P. Siva Ram, Ph.D. in Sociology, is a Senior Faculty in (CHRD) and (NIRD), Hyderabad under the Ministry of Rural Development, Government of India and Guwahati Regional Centre NIRD. Currently, he is a coordinating and leading a consultancy project on “National Level Key resource Centre (NLKRC) on Drinking Water and sanitation”, Ministry of Rural Development. He has attended more than 100 seminars, workshops, and symposiums in India. He has published several papers in the national and international journals. He authored two books.
