Challenging Problems in Horticultural and Forest Pathology

J.N. Sharma (Editor) R C Sharma (Editor)
Synopsis After self-sufficiency in food production, major focus of modern agriculture in India is on diversification, and horticultural crops have become an important component of diversified agriculture. Similarly, systematic management of forests is also the need of the hour in view of dwindling forest cover in this age of development and urbanization. Apart from other constraints, appearance of diseases problems especially in horticultural crops has posed a serious threat in their successful cultivation. Epidemics of scab and premature leaf fall in apple, mango malformation, bacterial wilt of solanaceous vegetables and ginger rhizome rot have challenged the growers in the recent past, apart from large scale drying of shisham and kikar in northern India. This book is based on a symposium on ‘Challenging Problems in Horticultural and Forest Pathology’ held on November, 2003 at Dr.Y.S. Parmar University of Horticultural and Forestry, Nauni, Soaln in which the experts highlighted the major disease problems inflicting horticultural and forest crops. Challenging diseases problems of major fruits, vegetables, mushrooms and forest crops caused by fungal, bacterial and viral pathogens are elaborated in this book along with available management technology. Recent developments in disease diagnosis by molecular methods, and sanitary and phyto-sanitary issues for trade in horticultural crops are also included. It is hoped that this book will be beneficial to the users including policy-makers, horticulturists, teachers and students.
