Synopsis Mobile Communications has emerged as one of the most important sectors of the global economy. World over this sector is witnessing revolutionary technological advances. After 2G, 2.5G, GSM and CDMA, it is now 3G, which is expected to bring in sweeping changes the way people communicate and their life style. India is poised to usher in a massive growth in the global mobile arena, next only to China. India currently has both GSM and CDMA technologies operating successfully and 3G technology is on the verge of being introduced in a big way. In order to leapfrog to a preeminent position in the mobile arena, it is necessary for India to adopt clear strategic approach. Electronics Today, India’s FIRST Techno-Economics Electronics Monthly Journals, now 38-year-old, organized a two-day International Conference on Mobile Communications for value-added services (September 13-14, 2005), which discussed Technology of Mobile Communications coupled with the evolution towards next generation systems and techniques and technologies for value-added services. It also covered the use of mobile/wireless networks as a base for low-cost, affordable universal solution for electronic transactions and how smart cards play the role of a universal transaction element.
