Synopsis In the present book, the author discusses Indian women's poetic traditions transcending both the Victorian and syntactic restrictions of an English tradition. From a 'raised consciousness' perspective, the biological poetry often ridiculed is celebrated in the light of the changing trends in the concept of womanhood. Central to this book is the inherent concern with feminist critical theory and its impact on current approaches to the study of literature. The poets discussed are: Kamala Das, Sujata Bhatt, Mamta Kalia, Imtiaz Dharker, Suniti Namjoshi and Eunice de Souza. The focus here is on women poets who have portrayed the struggle between 'traditional structures' and 'raised consciousness' of the women they encounter. This dialectics that is so evident in current literary works is richly illuminated and sensitively handled by the author.
