Synopsis The world now has become a global village and the students of secondary schools are expected to know more and more about this global village. There have been far reaching changes in the world after World War II and the entire landscape of the world civilization has changed, which needs to be comprehended by the students of the secondary schools. It is quite interesting and surprising that in Delhi to quote and example, social studies is a compulsory subject at the secondary level, but the results of the secondary school examinations are rather very low. Students dread appearing social studies. Especially the science students who are very good at science subjects, find themselves in a very embarrassing position in social studies. But that should not discourage the curriculum planners. There is something lacking in the teaching methods. Secondary school social studies curriculum should include world civilization, world geography and social history of various countries according to the location of the country concerned.

Dr. M.A. Khan, professor-cum-Chief Scientist is Hed, Division of Environmental Sciences, S.K. University of Agricultural Sciences and Technology of Kashmir, Shalimar, Srinagar. His major research faci include environmental biology, production ecology, environmental pollution and impact assessment and biodiversity. He is a recipient of UNESCO fellowship at the University of Vienna, Austria. Widely traveled academician, Prof. Khan has almost 30 years of research and teaching experience and taught at various universities at home and abroad. He has visited several countries for conferences and lectures, and was a visiting scientist at the Italian Institute of Hydrobiology, Pallanza and Windermere Laboratory, Freshwater Biological Association, England. Besides having authored/edited some books, Prof. Khan has 85 research papers to his credit published in national and international journals. He has been the Principal Investigator and Co-Pl. of several research projects including those sponsored by the Ministry of Environment and Forests, New Delhi and Indian Council of Agricultural Research, New Delhi. An active fellow / member of a range of national and international scientific association, Prof. Khan conferences and environment awareness programmes. He bagged prestigious World Environment Congress Award and World 2000 Millennium for his significant contribution in the field of environmental sciences.
