Synopsis The intention of policy-makers and planners to promote Women Development and Empowerment is to be implemented by Organisations entrusted with this work. Chapter 2 concentrates on the Concept of Women Development and Empowerment affecting women in its various facets followed by the Chapter 3 which examines the Challenges of Women Development and Empowerment in 21st century. Chapter 4 relates to the role of UN systems in providing platform for discussion and exchange of information on problems faced by women in the world and specific countries and the methodology to overcome them. It also deals with assistance to India both in financial and non-financial form. Chapter 5 examines the structure, functions and role of the Department of Women and Child Development, Ministry of Human Resource Development, GOI, New Delhi. Chapter 6 examines the Role of National Council for Women. Chapter 7 examines the Role of Central Social Welfare Board as an instrument of Women Development. Chapter 8 discusses the Role of Voluntary Organizations in the promotion of women’s status. Chapter 9 examines the role of UGC in promoting the cause of women. Chapter 10 discusses the Role of Local Government (Panchayati Raj and Municipal Administration) in the promotion of women welfare. Chapter 11 deals with a case study of one Indian state, i.e. Haryana. All the chapters have been supplemented with charts, tables and case studies, statistics and references from reports ranging from United Nations to Local Levels.The present book would be of use to administrators, political elite and academicians interested in women empowerment. It would also be of interest to those in Government, Voluntary Sector, Universities and Colleges who are engaged in teaching, research, consultancy and extension activities for Women Development and Empowerment.

Aruna Goel

Dr. Aruna Goel an eminent scholar of Sanskrit and Indian Philosophy is currently Professor of Sanskrit at Panjab University, Chandigarh, and member of Sahitya Academy, Govt. of India (Sanskrit Board) and member of Senate of Panjab University, Chandigarh. She was earlier member University Grants Commission, Govt. of India, New Delhi and a  member of the Society of India Institute of Advaqnced study, Shimla. She is on the Advisory panel of Rashtriya Sanskrit Sansthan ( A Deemed University) to start Sanskrit courses to suit current needs. She has one more than 30 years of experience in teaching and research of Sanskrit and Indian Philosophy. She has completed a UGC major research project on Modern Knowledge and ancient Sanskrit Literature. She has authored more than 20 research books which are of great use for Sanskrit scholars of other discipline as these books are interdisciplinary in approach. She has published 85 research papers in Indian and Foreign journals. Dr. Aruna Goel was awarded cultural exchange programmed by Ministry of HRD, GOI, New Delhi to visit Hungary. She also visited most of the European countries and lectured on Indian Philosophy with special references to Yoga. She is widely traveled in India and abroad. She has been honored by many awards. She has been invited by academic institution to deliver convocation addresses and talk on important areas of Indian Philosophy.
