L. Subramaniam, Ustad Bismillah Khan
Synopsis

Dr. L. Subramaniam, India's violin icon and Ustad Bismillah Khan, the great shehnai maestro come together in this rare recording to present the art of jugalbandhi. This is perhaps the first time that Bismillah Khan played a jugalbandhi with a South Indian classical musician. In this album the two great masters perform the raga Kalyani (Yaman). The raga Kalyani is one of the melakarta ragas (parent scales) in Carnatic music and its equivalent in Hindustani music is raga Yaman. In Western classical music, it is known as the Lydian mode. In this album, the composition is set to Teentaal, a 16 beat cycle. The first part of the composition is in a slow tempo (Vilambit) and the second part is in a faster tempo (Drut).

India's foremost violinist Dr. L. Subramaniam is one of the greatest living representatives of the South Indian classical system of music today. He has performed on countless stages in over fifty countries for the past five decades. After learning Carnatic music from his father and guru, Prof. V. Lakshminarayana, he studied Western classical composition and created the Global Fusion idiom.

Bharath Ratna Ustad Bismillah Khan trained under his uncle Ali Bux Wilayatu', a shehnai player attached to Varanasi's Vishwanath temple. One of the most outstanding shehnai players, Bismillah Khan attained astonishing mastery over the instrument and enthralled listeners all over the world. He was awarded the Sangeet Natak Akademi Award, the Tansen Award of the Madhya Pradesh Government and also the prestigious Bharat Ratna. He passed away in 2006.

About the artist

Ustad Bismillah Khan

Ustad Bismillah Khan (March 21, 1916 – August 21, 2006) was an Indian shehnai maestro. He was the third classical musician to be awarded the Bharat Ratna (in 2001), the highest civilian honour in India and gained worldwide acclaim for playing the shehnai for more than eight decades.

Bismillah Khan was born in a bihari family at Bhirung Raut Ki Gali, in Dumraon, Bihar, as the second son of Paigambar Khan and Mitthan. He was named as Qamaruddin to rhyme with Shamsuddin, their first son. His grandfather, Rasool Baksh Khan uttered "Bismillah" (the basmala) after looking at the newborn, thus he was named Bismillah Khan.

His ancestors were court musicians and used to play in Naqqar khana in the princely states of Bhojpur, now in Bihar. His father was a shehnai player in the court of Maharaja Keshav Prasad Singh of Dumraon Estate, Bihar.

At the age of six, he moved to Varanasi.[1] He received his training under his uncle, the late Ali Baksh 'Vilayatu', a shehnai player attached to Varanasi's Vishwanath Temple.
