Synopsis

Music is in the realm of the unseen...it inspires the listener to create pictures and dream on the canvas of silence...it is the language of the soul that knows not time...nor space. All classical systems of Indian Music are based on Raaga and Taala. Ganesh of the internationally acclaimed violin duo Ganesh-Kumaresh and Debashish Bhattacharya, a master Guitarist from Kolkata, have come together to craft soulful music based on Raagas and Taalas that are common to both Hindustani (North Indian) and Carnatic (South Indian) Music. The opening composition, Mohan Kalyani meets Shuddha Kalyan, a creation of Ganesh, is based on the raagas Mohan Kalyani of the Carnatic system and Shuddha Kalyan of the Hindustani system. The second composition Megh Showers Madhya Malati beautifully explores raagas Megh and Madhya Malati, through a composition of Sadarang set to jhaltaal, a ten-beat cycle. As the name suggests, Charukeshi is the melodic structure that is the inspiration for the third track, Fullmoon Charukeshi with unfolds itself in the raagam-taanam-pallern. The concluding composition, Eternal Bhairavi is a creatrion of the great saint poeat saint poet Purandra Das. Based on raagas Sindhu Bhairavi and Bhairavi, a raaga known as the queen of bhakti-rasa or the devotional mood, it is a befittiing final to the enchanting musical journey explored the two musicians. In a nutshell, Adhrishta is a seamless blend of varying systems of music, an album which is traditional at the core but contemporary in its treatment. Ganesh Rajagopalan is a renowned violin player known for his revolutionary concepts and new bold themes in the sphere of Carnatic Music. Under the guidance of his father and guru, Shri T.S. Rajagopalan, his duet performances with his brother R. Kumaresh, has brought a wave of fresh, new sound to Carnatic music. His other collaborations with artistes of various generes range from John Mclaughlin, Zakir Hussain, Pharaoh Sanders, Bill Laswell to Rajan & Sajan Mishra, Gundecha Brothers, A.R. Rahman, Ilayaraja and Vishal Bharadwaj speak volumes about the creative, original, innovative and expressive qualities of his music. He is a composer whose melodies are much sought-after by musicians and dancers alike. His compositions are not only in the traditional genre, but also extend to the world of films, dance ballets and contemporary works. A child prodigy, Debashish Bhattacharya studied music under the great sarod legend Ustad Ali Akbar Khan, Pt. Ajoy Chakraborty (Vocals) and Pt. Brij Bhushan Kabra, the godfather of the Indian clasical guitar. He created a unique trinity of slide guitars, each one taking the instruments to new heights of sublimity. First the chaturangi, a 24-string hollow neck guitar, followed by the 14-string gandharvi, which holds the longest glissando and the anandi, a 4-string slide ukulele, usually played at the end of a performance. All three combine aspects of the western guitar with elements of traditionsl Indian instruments. Recipient of the BBC Planet Award for World Music in 2007, this exceptionally gifted musician has successfully collaborated with musicians from varied genres.
