The Portuguese presence on the Arabian Sea coast of the Deccan dates from the beginning of the 16th century, with the establisment of Goa as the capital of a rapidly expanding maritime rnterprise that eventually encompassed much of Asia. In and around Goa, and further up the coast of what is now Maharashtra.

This guidebook is the first to showcase the vestiges of the Portugese sea forts of the Deccan, drawing attention to their surviving battlemented ramparts and angular bastions, watchtowers and lighthouses, chapels and churches, such as Reis Magos and Tiracol in Goa, others are now dilapidated and overgrown.

This guidebook contains descriptions of all the major Portuguese sea forts of the region, illustrated with newly commissioned photographs and site maps.

About the authors

Amita Kanekar

AMITA KANEKAR lives in Mumbai, where she teaches architectural history and comparative mythology. This is her first novel.

Surendra Kumar

Footloose for the last three decades in different parts of the world, have used Indian films as a potent tool of cultural diplomacy and organized retrospectives in 10 countries, most recently, three of them at the Gene Siskel Film Center Chicago: retrospective on Raj Kapoor, retrospective on Guru Dutt and a retrospective of contemporary Classics of Indian Cinema. In recent years Surendra Kumar has served as a Minister (Press, Information and Culture) at the High Commission of India in London and Ambassador of India in Mozambique and Libya. He also served as the Consul General of India in Chicago from February 2003. Presently, he is serving as the High Commissioner of India to Kenya in Nairobi.
