Synopsis

Plants have been used by man for variety of purposes. The use of medicinal plants in maintaining the health of animals and human beings has been recognised since Vedic period. The importance of drug resources has also been recognised throughout the word. Himalaya, owing to complex topography and variety of climate has blessed with us rich heritage of medicinal plants wealth.

Ethnoveterinary plants of Central Himalaya present an account of folk-medicinal plants used in animal health care. It enlists 409 ethnoveterinary plants species arranged in alphabetical order and providing information on their Latin names, family, vernacular name(s), a brief description, flowering and fruiting period, habitat, distribution and plant(s) and plant part(s) thereof used to cure animal diseases or disorders along with the source of information. An analysis of data has also been provided to make the treatments more comprehensive and complex.

The description is supported by 276 colour photographs. In addition to this the book contains the lists of traditional veterinary healers of Central Himalaya and glossary of common medical term(s). For facilitating consultation, indices are also provide to Latin names, family names and vernacular names.

About the authors

P.C. Pande

Dr. P.C. Pande, M.Sc. (Bombay), Ph.D., F.I.F.S., F.B.S., F.E.S., presently Reader in Botany, Kumaon University, S.S.J. Campus, Almora. Dr. Pande obtained his Ph.D. on “Flora of Almora District” in 1985. Since then he is actively involved in researches of various fields of botany, viz., taxonomy, Ethnobotany, Ecology and IPRs. He has published more than 80 research research papers and is author and editor to 4 books. He is currently engaged on research of Traditional knowledge system of Medicinal plants of Uttaranchal.

Lalit Tiwari

Shri Lalit Tiwari (born February 21, 1980) did his M.Sc. in botany in 2001. He was the member of Lok Vigyan Kendra, Almora for one year where he organized a national seminar on “Traditional Knowledge System”. During 2002 he worked in a project on “Traditional Knowledge System of Uttaranchal Himalaya” which was sponsored by Indira Gandhi National Centre for Arts (IGNCA), New Delhi. He is the member of several societies concerned with Traditional Knowledge System and Ethnobotany. His main field of interest is “Veterinary Medicinal Plants of Uttaranchal Himalayas”. He has extensively traveled remote areas of Uttaranchal Himalaya and is devoted to record the traditional veterinary knowledge of indigenous people. Presently, he is working in Homeopathic Pharmacopoeia Laboratory Ghaziabad.
