Colonial Assam and Women's Writing

Nizara Hazarika (Author)
Synopsis

The book discusses literary writings of women in Assam of the colonial era. It studies the socio-economic changes that were brought on by colonialism, such as a different understanding of gender relations and the role of women. It examines topics like women's movement from the private to the public sphere and women's sense of autonomy and agency that are reflected in the writings. It is concerned with writings in periodicals that reflect women's awareness of their position and status in society. It also takes up the social reality presented by female writers in novels where awareness of women's subjectivity and identity is presented in a subtle manner. It focuses on the socio-cultural perspectives of women and their search for an identity as reflected in literature.
