Role of Punjab in Freedom Struggle

Vikram Singh (Author)
Synopsis

This book entitled “Role of Punjab in Freedom Struggle” will be beneficial for the students of Modern Indian History. Punjab offers an interesting case study. It was the birth place of ‘Kukas’ who started the war of Independence against the British Rule. The brave warriors from this province had offered stubborn resistance and ultimately turned back the Germans from the wall of Paris during the First World War. The Punjab was the province where thousands of people were massacred in Jallianwala Bagh and the resolution for complete Independence was passed on the banks of Ravi. The people of Punjab were always ahead with raising the clarion call of the national leaders, but the Congress position in the Punjab was debilitated during the freedom struggle of India as the brave people of the province had fallen low in the eyes of the people of India. The aim of the present work is to analyze the response of the Punjab to the freedom struggle of India. How do we explain Punjab’s feeble of India. How do we explain Punjab’s feeble response? What was the Unionist Government’s role in the suppression of the “open rebellion” ? What was British policy towards Punjab during these crucial years? Why the Congress remained a rather weak and disunited organization in this province? There are some other allied questions which are to be examined in the coming pages. We also witness the rise of separatist tendencies among the Muslims and to some extent among the Sikhs as well. Then we see the emergence of agriculturist class as a force to reckon with. The unionist party came into power and dominated the Punjab politics from till 1945.

Contents: Preface. 1. Historical background of Punjab Politics. 2. Quit India movement: events and participants. 3. Quit India movement in Punjab. 4. British policy. 5. Non-congress parties and the quit India movement. Conclusion. Bibliography.
