Situating Sound and Rhythm (Music of Tamil Nadu)
Synopsis
In the field of music two kinds of appeals are cognisable. They may be termed as 'Primary' (Direct) and 'Secondary' (Indirect). Between Primary and Secondary appeals there are varieties of gradual transition. A performing artiste is always a creator. Creative artistry involves an intuitive mind. Historical memory serves as the background material for such an artistry. The link between history and artistry heightens the quality of aesthetic experience. Historical contextuality being a component of artistry, the need for situating melody and rhythm is obvious. Products of such an enquiry become models of the very aspirations of the artistes. The historical factors may be termed as 'Extra-musical'. It is true that the touchstone of art is emotion and not reason. Therefore we see in the paradoxical, a reconciliation of the incompatible, namely theory and practice. In this book an attempt is made to guage the distance between aesthetics nurtured by tradition and aesthetics demanded by external and varying climates of emotional response. It is hoped that the book would cater to the needs of the lovers of music, performing artistes and aspirants endeavouring to climb the ladder.
