The twenty well-researched papers in the volume, the outcome of a national seminar, explore concerns on development of tribal areas with specific respect to the North-east region of India. They take up environmental safety, status of women, justice and people’s rights and health care, exposing the glaring gaps in planning and implementation of initiatives in development. With respect to the state of Arunachal Pradesh in the region in particular, they examine its economic growth, geo-economic constraints of sustainable development, administration of justice, rural development particularly the Panchayati Raj asnd working of village development boards, and the state of women. They study the folk literature such as the Mising folk tales, the plight of the Adis under colonialism and little-known facets of life and culture like the sacred centres of the Apatanis and their adaption to contemporary changes and Sowa-Rigpa, the traditional medicinal system of the Himalayan region.
