Synopsis

Vegetable crops play a very virtal role in providing food and nutritional security specifically to Indians and rightly known as "Protective Food". Although India enjoys the second positions with respect to area and production of vegetable crops in the world, but unfortunately the productivity of Indian vegetables are quite low as compared to western countries in the world. The lower productivity of Indian vegetable crops are primarily due to cultivations of most of the vegetables under open conditions where the crops are exposed to both biotic (pests and diseases) as well as abiotic stresses (i.e. moisture stress. high temperature, imbalance nutrition, etc.). Among the vegetable crops suffers a lot due to a number of physiological disorders. Basically, Physiological Disorders refers to the breakdown of tissues that is not caused by either invasion by pathogen (disease carrying organisms) or by mechanical damage, rather may develop in response to an adverse pre-harvest and/or post harvest environment, especially temperature, or to a nutritional deficiency during growth and development. The information on different types of physiological disorders as well as mineral deficiency occurs in the vegetable crops are meager in the form of literature, hence there is an urgent need for development of a suitable in the form of a book dealing with various aspects of physiological disorders of vegetable crops grown in India. Keeping the above view the book, "Physiological Disorders & Mineral Deficiency of Vegetable" has been compiled by the authors.

The authours have tried together to incorporate most the information available on different aspects of physiological disorders and mineral deficiency, their causes and appropriate remedial measures with suitable coloured photographs as and when required. About the authors

U. Thapa

Dr. Umesh Thapa is working as Associate Professor in the Department of vegetable Crops, Faculty of Horticulture, Bidhan Chandra Krishi Viswavidyalaya, and Wet Bengal. He has brilliant career in Horticulture and is deeply attached in the field of Olericulture. Since 1997 he is actively engaged in teaching undergraduate courses both in Faculty of Horticulture and Agriculture and postgraduate in faculty of Horticulture ad Agriculture and postgraduate in faculty of Horticulture in improvement and production related of horticultural crops especially vegetable crops. He has to his credit a number of research papers and popular scientific articles in several scientific journal and magazines. He has experiences of supervising a good number of Ad-hoc schemes financed by Government of West Bengal and private sectors and rendered services as resource person in different programmes. He participated and presented papers in various National and International conferences, seminar, symposium and workshop. He is a life member of various reputed scientific societies and journals. Recently he has attended and presented a paper on International Conferences of European Forum on Agricultural research and development at Zurich, Switzerland. He is the author of book entitled “Varieties of Horticultural Crops.

Sri Pradyumna Tripathy presently working as Traning Associate (Horticulture) Krishi Vigyan Kendra, Orissa university of Agriculture and technology, Orissa. He has a brilliant academic career throughout. He did his B.Sc (Ag) and M.Sc (Ag) in Horticulture from Orissa university of Agriculture and technology, Bhubaneswar. The author secured first class position in his M.Sc. (Ag) Horticulture. The authors has privilege of serving the university as Junior scientist (Horticulture) and Training Associate (Horticulture), contributing to university’s mandate of research, extension and teaching. Several times he has the opportunity of shouldering the additional responsibility of quality planting material production of Horticultural crops under Revolving Funds. The author is the life member of several scientific journals. He has published number of research papers and articles. He has delivered a number of radio talks and imparted training to State Govt. officials and NGO workers in different forums. Attended number of International and National Training courses.
