Synopsis

This compendium of 17 papers attempts to examine the resonating influence of literature on Hindi cinema. Analyzing the influence of literature across cultures and timeframes, it shows the manner in which literary writings have moulded cinematic trends. Taking a close look at adaptations in contemporary Hindi cinema, it discusses at length the adaptations of literary writings of Mahashweta Devi, Mirza Hadi Ruswa, Gustav Flaubert, Jane Austen, Sarat Chandra Chattopadhyay, B. S. Bedi, and Ruskin Bond into Hindi cinema.

It further analyzes the influences on Hindi cinema by the repertoire of Raj fiction and British Heritage Cinema. Finally it takes stock of popular theme of India’s partition in Hindi cinema as well as adaptations of Shakespeare’s plays such as Macbeth and Othello.
