Synopsis Many residents of Calcutta and visitors and tourists to this city want to know something about the plants whose beautiful flowers, flower-heads, graceful appearance or welcome fragrance pleases and charms them. There is no illustrated book to fill this need. This work is an humble attempt to provide a handy manual for identification and appreciation of the ornamental trees and shrubs of the city. It surely does not include all the flowering plants of Calcutta; they are too many to be described in a small volume like this. Only the more common, more ornamental or the ones which have potential of greater popularity and plantation in more areas are included. In some species (e.g. Arjun, Bakul, Kadamba, etc.) it is the flower-heads or the cluster of flowers and not the individual flowers, which make the tree beautiful, such species are included.
