Chakmas in India: An Ethnographic Approach to Human Studies

Debasish Paul (Author) N.B. Biswas (Author)
Synopsis

Chakmas in India are found to settle mostly in the north-eastern states of Mizoram, Arunachal Pradesh and Tripura. It is estimated that a little more than two lakhs of Chakmas souls are residing in the different states of India. The settlements of the Chakmas in India, particularly in Mizoran and in Arunachal Pradesh are seen as an unmatched tie with the dominant tribe of the respective state as they share contrasting social, cultural, economic and religious practices. The colume entittled "Chakmas in India: An Ethnographic Approach to Human Studies" is an effort to present the reverse journey of the Chakmas from being civilized to nomads, from being owner of land to stateless. Towards this end an ethnographic approach was adopted to enquire into the anthropological history of the Chakmas along with the survey research technique to enquire into their educational and occupational status.
