Art and Vision of Aurangabad Caves

Dulari Qureshi (Author)
Synopsis

˜Art and Vision of Aurangabad Caves" makes a detailed and exhaustive study of "Aurangabad caves". I explore every minutiae and microscopic particulars and idiosyncrasies of the artist. Since most of the previous work on Western Indian caves has concentrated on descriptive details, iconographic description, stylistic variations I have attempted at a greater understanding of the artists who have been ignored by most scholars. It is definitely not possible to identify the artist but one can at least make an effort to comprehend an artist through his work.

Meticulous documentation of every cave, each sculpture, has been my endeavour and trying to explain the significance of every sculpture even the subsidiary ones which have been neglected so far. While describing its significance I have taken the trouble to see the origin of every sculpture as during most of the time the bigger sculptures draw the attention of the writer while smaller carvings are conveniently neglected.

The book has been divided into six chapters excluding introductory chapter and conclusion. In each chapter I have taken the caves separately and described them according to the chronological numbers given by SAI. In each chapter I have systematically started from the exteriors of the cave. Starting with groundplan, door jambs, window frames, figures outside, pillars and pilasters of the Verandah, the details on the pillars and pilasters I have proceeded towards the main hall. Antechamber and finally the shrine details. Thus each cave has been discussed and described in its totality.

Research on this subject has been done with a view to study the movements of the artist from one place to another and for a better understanding of similarities and parallels, differences and dissimilarities amongst the many cave temples strewn all over Western India.
