Handbook of Waste Management in Sugar Mills and Distilleries

Ashwani Kumar (Author)
Synopsis This book is devoted to analyzing the factors responsible for the generation of pollutants by sugar and distillery industries and suggesting viable solutions for the problem. It begins by outlining the potential conflict between the demands of productive efficiency in an industry and legitimate concern for the impact of the productive processes employed on the environment and proceeds to indicate in specific detail steps that can mitigate possible damage to the environmental ecology. PCBs pollutant discharge limits, the state of the art technology available for the purpose and the current status of their adoption to meet prescribed standards are then discussed. Wastewater characteristics and microbiological issues involved in wastewater treatment are then outlined. This is followed by a technical analysis of the microbiology of the polluting process, its reaction kinetics and the calculation of the oxygen requirements and so on. The specifics of the Indian situation, the manufacturing process adopted in India, its wastewater generation potential - with its sourcewise characteristics - are then analysed, followed by steps to secure water balance and to minimise wastewater and assesses the efficiency potential of technology available in India. The book comprehensively covers the technical details of the processes of all anaerobic bio-methanization technologies adopted in India. Greatly enhancing the utility of the book for those interested in the two industries, there is a detailed account of the latest law relating to environmental protection, including obligations and responsibilities under each act. Wastewater analysis procedures pollutant discharge norms, legislation for setting up an industrial unit are all compiled as an appendix. In short, the book puts in one place all the information required by those engaged in sugar and distillery industries and is therefore an indispensable source of reference for anyone interested in the sugar economy.
