Education, State and Market: Anatomy of Neoliberal Impact

Ravi Kumar (Editor)
Synopsis

The book views the effects of neo-liberal capitalism on education in India. It examines the shift from welfarism to neo-liberalism and the latter’s impact on higher education and school-level education: how neo-liberal thought and practice as transformed education at the policy level and social relations among teachers and learners. It studies how various disciplines like economics and legal studies and issues like the language question are transformed in this context. Incorporating discussions on inequality and disparity, conception of knowledge, the emancipatory discourse with specific reference to the views of Phule, Ambedkar and Gandhi, it discusses neglect of public schools in Delhi based on ethnographic fieldwork and the nature of private schooling in Delhi. It takes up key questions with regard to the development of capitalism. It analyses the consequences of social, economic and educational policies that increase inequality, exploitation, and undermine personal and social freedoms.
