Five Indian Women Novelists: Feminist Vision

C.L. Khatri (Editor) Sandhya Saxena (Editor)
Synopsis

Assuming the role of the absolute sovereigns of the half-world, women writers have strongly articulated their struggle for liberation and self-assertion through their inherent art of story telling. with their independent identity and creative zeal women writers have ushered into a new ear of glory and gusto. The whole gamut of Indian literature in English would be incomplete if the contribution of women writers is not considered duly.

The present anthology has been meticulously designed to encompass the works and contribution of five Indian women novelists who treasured the domain of Indian literature in English. The article concentrate on the works of Shashi Deshpande, Gita Mehta, Manju Kapur, Shobha De and Kiran Desai who hace carried forward the odyssey initiated by Sarojini Naidu, Toru Dutt, Kamla Das, Ruth Prawer Jhabvala, Kamla Markandaya, and other women writers of yore. The scholarly article included into this volume explore the fictional cosmos of the five novelists under consideration. Shashi Deshpande's concern with the marital relations, Gita Mehta's deep understanding of Indian history, culture and mysticism, Manju Kapur's carvings on 'two- inches of ivory', Shobha De's contribution to the mass market with her bold and highly individualistiv style and the noticeable stamp of Kiran Desai's own inheritance on her fiction have been profoundly surveyed. The anthology will certainly be of great help to the teachers, researchers and scholars of English literature.
