This book The Dynamics of Development in North East India is an attempt to view development thinking as an ongoing questioning, critique and probing alternative options, deliberating on some of the pertinent issues by scholars who are engaged in research and have been contributing massively to the academic knowledge through publications. It is not to argue, however that the issues and challenges discussed have been all and adequately addressed. Nevertheless, it is a serious discourse by a cross-section of professional academicians, administrators and a few young researchers providing a panoramic view of development in the region. The book attempts to address some other key questions like - Have development in the region at its present context fail? Do we dare to think out of our cocoons and nurture our own development thinking? What about the huge funds from the federal exchequer pocketed by those few who have finally emerge as local elites? The book talks on a wide range of developmental issues - historical and situational problems of the region; paradigm shift - a shift from politico-bureaucratic centric development to people-centric model of development; people's participatory development; Article 371(A) and importance of preserving traditional institutions; human development and human rights; governance, education and women empowerment; integrating gender into developmental policies and plans; youth, unemployment and AIDS; and village economy and selected implementing agencies such as NREGA, VDB, SGSY.
