East Kolkata Wetlands: Demographic & Livelihood Profile

Nitai Kundu (Author) Mausumi Pal (Author) Anjana Saha (Author)

East Kolkata Wetlands EKW has an organic relationship with Kolkata city since its inception. The EKW used for water route drainage and garbage disposal. A Waste recycling practice using city waste sewage and garbage, was developed out of waste disposal over time. Thus the area became famous and well known throughout the world for its recycling practices.

Indian judicial system even came forward to protect this system when an attempt was made by the Government of West Bengal to set up a World Trade Centre filling a large water area in 1989. In 2002 Ramsar bureau declared this wetlands system as site of international importance for its unique recycling practice. A number of documents, books papers are available for consultation. But there is hardly any systematic study on the entire households living in the EKW.
