Thyristors: Theory and Applications

R.K. Sugandhi (Author) K.K. Sugandhi (Author)

Since its introduction in the early sixties, the thyristor has come to stay as a basic building block in many industrial and power system applications. Today, thyristors are being increasingly used for diverse applications in the industrial field. The present book encompasses the rapid advances in the theory and practical applications of thyristors. The first section of the book covers characteristics of thyristors, their fabrication technology; line commutated converters and inverters, dual converters and forced commutated inverters.

The second section is entirely devoted to the delineation of thyristor application in the control of ac and dc motors, choppers, HVDC transmission lines, optimisation and protection measures. Equally emphasising both theory and application of thyristors this book will be an invaluable text for engineering students and a useful productive reference for professional engineers.

About the authors

R.K. Sugandhi

is Deputy Manager at BHEL, New Delhi. A first position holder in B.E. Hons. in Electrical Engineering from Bhopal (1971), he acquired vast experience in his field first as a lecturer at the Government College of Engineering and Technology, Raipur, and later as Project and Applications Engineer at BHEL from where he went to Siemens A.G., West Germany, on deputation in 1976. He accepted his present assignment on returning to India in 1977. Major projects involving the use of thyristors on which he has worked include basic oxygen furnace, oxygen lance drive, mercury arc rectifier replacement, continuous casting complex and static excitation control, transfer car and metal transfer car. His research includes comprehensive work in fast upcoming field of static ac drives and reactive power compensation.

K.K. Sugandhi

has gathered wide experience in the teaching of physics after passing M.Sc. with distinction from Vikram University in 1966. Before his present position of lecturer in physics at the Government College of Engineering and Technology, Raipur, he taught the subject at the Government Engineering Colleges at Jabalpur and Ujjain. He has also been a visiting lecturer in physics at Vikram University from 1969 to 1979.
