Islamic Architecture of Delhi

G.S. Khwaja (Editor) B.R. Mani (Foroward)
Synopsis

This work on Islamic Architecture of the City of Delhi is an updated document of its own kind. Delhi is a wonderful city for being the only place which showcases nearly all the styles of Islamic architecture. It deals with the concepts and evolution, in terms of formation and its summation, of various religious and secular buildings like mosques, mausoleums, hospices, madrasas, palaces, forts, gardens, minars etc. This book throws light not only on different styles of Islamic Architecture but also of Victorian Architecture in Delhi. Separate chapters have been devoted to define and depict Indo- Islamic architectural innovations during Sultanate period and that of Timurids or Mughals with some light on structures of Raj too. A little touch of political history while describing the essence of architectural styles, and factors responsible for blending among different styles, makes this book worth reading. Meticulously done plans, high resolution colour photographs on glossy art paper and lucidity in the narrative are some of the characteristics of this work. Much has been written on Islamic Architecture but since the invention of modern gadgets of documentation and assistance of digitized photography and colour printing the presentation in the field of art and architecture now has become more eloquent. It is a good research tool for those who have genuine interest in Islamic Architecture. In the 100th Year of foundation of the Seventh City of Delhi this book is a gift to the art lovers throughout the globe in general and dwellers of this imperial city in particular.
