Human Rights Developments in South Asia

V.T. Patil (Author)
Synopsis The South Asian people share many socioeconomic and political problems such as poverty, illiteracy, unemployment, unequal treatment of women, violence against women, pollution, exploitation of child labour and religious fundamentalism. Human rights organisations in South Asia have recently taken steps to cooperate in addressing their common problems. Even in this infoage, South Asia remain as the most terrorised, most poorest, most illiterate, most malnourished, and, least gender sensitive region. In this region, the challenges of human rights development has continued for several decades against large-scale of human rights violations. Consequences of these events have raised fears in this region slipping into even greater anarchy, with worsening social, economic and political situation. The existence of significant ongoing human rights abuses is not acknowledged by the South Asian Governments or their mainstream media. South Asian Governments have ratified some international human rights instruments, but such policy is not reflected in the national constitution or law of any government. Organisations like South Asian Forum for Human Rights (SAFHR), are not the complete answer, but give a voice to the needs of the people. They provide hope for millions of destitute persons in South Asia who are denied their basic rights and fundamental freedoms.
