Dancing with Siva: Hinduism's Contemporary Catechism

Satguru Sivaya Sbramuniyaswami (Author)
Synopsis

A richly illustrated sourcebook of Indian spirituality in question-and-answer form, exploring how to know the Divine, honor all creation and see God everywhere, in everyone. The Master Course Trilogy you will find in this book the deepest truths and in-sights of Indian spirituality, some of it never published before, all of it relevant to your personal awakening on the path to merging with God. Drawn from fifty years of yogic realizations and sharing the Hindu mystical teachings with aspirants, Dancing with siva is the first book of a remarkable trilogy called The Master Course. The trilogy is a detailed summary of astanga yoga also called raja yoga, which contains eight successive steps, each one dependent upon the one that precedes it. These eight steps are yama (restraint), niyama (observance), asana (posture), pranayama (breath control), pratyabhara (sense withdrawal), dharana (concentration), dhyana (meditation) and samadhi (contemplation). The trilogy articulates in lucid terms why you must begin at the beginning, with a firm foundation of philosophical clarity and good character, and proceed from there. Dancing with Siva lays out the philosophical, Vedic-Agamic beliefs, attitudes and expectations of the Saivite Hindu religion. Living with Siva, the second book of the trilogy, explores Saivite lifestyle, culture, family life, character-building and the overcoming of uncomplimentary habits. It focuses on yama, niyama and, in a lesser way, asana and pranayama (hatha yoga).

Recognized worldwide as one of contemporary Hinduism's foremost leaders, Satguru Sivaya Subramuniyaswami carries on a lineage of spiritually illumined gurus from Sri Lanka. For over four decades Subramuniyaswami has taught Hinduism to Hindus and seekers from all faiths. Today, Subramuniyaswami carries forward this Nandinatha lineage as satguru of Kauai Aadheenam, a 51-acre temple-monastery complex on Hawaii's Garden Island of Kauai. From this asrama, he and his monastics nurture the spiritual life of Hindu communities throughout the world through his several institutions, Saiva Siddhanta Church and Hindu Heritage Endowment. He has established a branch monastery on the island of Mauritius. Founder and publisher of the international monthly newspaper Hinduism Today, his more than 30 books unfold unique and practical insights on Hindu metaphysics, mysticism and yoga based on decades of teaching, counseling and initiating devotees. In 1986, New Delhi's World Religious Parliament named him one of five modern-day Jagadacharyas, world teachers, for his international efforts in promoting a Hindu renaissance for half a century. The Global Forum of Spiritual and parliamentary Leaders for Human Survival chose Subramuniyaswami as a Hindu representative at its remarkable conferences. At Oxford in 1988, Moscow in 1990 and Rio de Janiero in 1992, he joined religious, political and scientific leaders from all countries to discuss privately, for the first time in history, the future of human life on this planet. At Chicago's historic centenary Parliament of the World's Religions in September 1993, Subramuniyaswami was elected as one of three presidents to represent Hinduism at the prestigious Presidents' Assembly, a core group of 25 men and women voicing the needs of world faiths.
