Synopsis

Vegetable crops, the important component of horticulture security which is required in daily diet of both rich and poor. Apart from these, nursery management, soil and climatic requirements, crop improvement, hybrid technology, cropping systems, physiological disorders, training and pruning are some other very important aspects covered. To enhance vegetable production, adoption of modern technologies like vegetable cultivation organically, in river bed and under protected condition; precision and diversified farming’; applications of indigenous technical knowledge (ITK); integrated pest management (IPM) and Integrated disease management (IDM); vegetable cultivation in containers and saline water; hydroponic vegetable cultivation; development of growth simulating models; proper handling, storage, packaging and transportation are necessary. The last chapter on genera of vegetable crops comprising of 405 genera and more than 750 species of major and minor vegetables found in different parts of the world with special reference to taxonomic details, origin and distribution, climate and soil, cultivation practices and importance and uses.

About the authors

L C De

Dr. Lakshman Chandra De is a Senior Scientist in the field of horticulture, presently working as Joint Director, ICAR Research Complex for NEH Region, Arunachal Pradesh Centre, Basar, Arunachal Pradesh. He obtained his M.Sc. and Ph.D. degrees in Horticulture with specilaisation in Floriculture from the Indian Agricultural Research Institute, New Delhi. He has eight years of research and extension and two years administrative experience. He has published 45 research paprs in reputed journals and written 22 research abstracts, 21 popular articles and one research bulletin. He is the co-author of a most popular and valued book entitled Advanced Commercial Floriculture (in 2 volumes). He is a member of several scientific societies and referee of reputed journals.

Supriya Kumar Bhattacharjee

Prof. S.K. Bhattacharjee is an eminent scientist in the field of horticulture, retired as Project Coodinator, all India Coordinated Research Project on Floriculture, Indian council of Agricultural Research, Indian Agricultural Research Institute, New Delhi, on January 31, 2003. He obtained his M.Sc. (Ag.) in Horticulture from Calcutta University. He is also a diploma holder in Business Management and Industrial Administration, United Nations studies and Landscape Architecture. He has 38 years research, teaching, management, developmental and administrative experience in private organisations, Indian Botanic Gardens, Botanical Survey of India, State Agricultural Universitites and ICAR Institutes. He was Head of the Division of Medicinal and Aromatic Crops, Indian Institute of Horticulture Research, Bangalore. He has also served as Professor of Horticulture and Professor in charge, North Bengal Campus, Bidhan Chandra Krishi Visvavidyalaya, Cooch-Behar, West Bengal, which has later converted into a full-fledged Agricultural University presently named as Uttar Banga Krishi Visvavidyalaya. While serving in private organisations, he has laid out many landscape gardens in different agro-climatic conditions of the country, collected a wide range of indigenous and exotic plants from India and abroad and propagated tem on a large scale for use in gardens. Prof. Bhattacharjee has visited several foreign countries. He has published about 400 research papers and popular scientific articles in journals of national and international repute. He is the author of seven books among which Advanced commercial Floriculture, Handbook of Medicinal Plants have been widely acclaimed and well-received.
