Anjan Saikia (Author) Lokman Ali (Author) Kaushal Kishore (Author)
Synopsis
Population is dynamic phenomenon that varies spatio-temporally. Its study occupies a significant place in geographical literature. But sometimes population grows at much faster rate than the resource generation. This situation leads to population explosion. Rapid growth of population over the past one hundred years results from a difference between the birth rate and death rate. Population explosion around the world affects all people through the impact on economy, environment and food availability as well as food accessibility. Subsequently, it becomes a threat to socio-economic well being of human beings.

It is a well known fact that at present India is the second largest populated country of the world. Population explosion has taken place in India, which is one of the most alarming and threatening issues for each and every India. According to the Census 2011, India possesses 17.5 percent population with 2.4 percent landmass of the world. The population of our country has increased from 238 millions in 1901 to 361 million in 1951 and from 361 millions to 1027 millions in 2001 and now in 2011, it is 1210.19 millions. The population is growing at the rate of about 17.64% and we are having 43200 births per day and 30 births per minute. If the situation continues like this then the time will not be far off when India will replace China to be the first largest populated country of the world, thus facing development problems as, education, health and social, severely.

It is hoped that papers in this book would serve as useful reference material for researchers, policy makers and consultants in the field of population studies.
