Synopsis

With the increase in our knowledge and competency in molecular biology especially in isolation and cloning of important and useful genes of agronomic interest and development of useful transgenics, it is expected that biotechnology will play a major role in increasing the production and productivity of crop species and help in crossing the yield barriers. The transgene studies carried out world over in many laboratories for the past three decades have led to development of many interesting breakthroughs, notable among them in the recent past are post transcriptional gene silencing and small interfering RNA (siRNA). In addition, improvement of nutritional factors in horticultural crops and use of plant systems for developing and harvesting plant bodies and pharmaceutically important products and compounds will come a long way to make horticulture to take its rightful place in human development and progress. Besides primary metabolites, plants produce drugs, pesticides, dyes flavors and fragrances. Metabolic engineering of plants has shown its potential both in basic research and as a tool of modern plant breeding. Designer crops can produce valuable enzymes, proteins and antibodies.

In this volume, volume 5 of the series, the available information on gene cloning and transgenic development in horticulture crops has been compiled and it is hoped that this would be very useful to students and researchers in the field of biotechnology of horticulture crops.

About the authors

H P Singh

Born on 2nd July, 1950, Dr. H.P. Singh has served horticulture in various capacities namely Project Coordinator (fruits); Director, NCR for Banana; Horticulture Commissioner, Govt. of India; Chairman, Coconut Development Board; Dean (Agriculture), GBPUA & T, Pantnagar; Vice Chancellor, Rajendra Agricultural University, Pusa and now Deputy Director General (Horticullture), ICAR.

He has also served international organizations like the Chairman of APCC, Jakarta, National Director for internationally-aided projects and Chairperson of Steering Committee of BAPNET of Bioversity International and implemented various international programmes. Besides, excellent academic record, Dr. Singh has contributed to research and agricultural education which ha earned him three international, twenty one national awards and five fellowships including the Fellow of NAAS. He has developed many cultivars and technologies which has shaped the horticulture. Recognising his immense contribution, OUAT, Bhubaneshwar, has conferred D.Sc. last year.

Dr. Singh is the architect of Mission mode approach for horticultural development, starting from planning to execution which ahs been due to his insight. He has provided to horticulture and is credited to have authored and edited 39 books and 30 bulletins, besides 175 research papers. He has widely traveled in India and abroad. His efforts have provided a strong foundation for horticulture development, leading to Golden Revolution in the country.

V A Parthasarathy

Dr. V.A. Parthasarathy, Ph.D. a renowned and well-known horticulturalist cum biotechnologist of repute is the Director of Indian institute of Spices research (ICAR), calicut from 2002. He is a recipient of ICAR Team Award in Horticulture (as leader) during 2002 and is widely traveled. He has more than 30 years of research experience in Horticulture / plantation crops like citrus, vegetables, gerbera, gladiolus, coconut and spices. An expert in bio-technology and breeding of horticulture crops, he has published over 170 research articles in refereed journals, edited 15 books and contributed about 40 chapters and invited reviews. He also guided many Ph.D. students. He is member of many committees.

K Nirmal Babu

Dr. K. Nirmal Babu, Ph.D. had his doctorate from the University of Calicut and did Post-doctoral work in molecular biology at the University of California, Davis, USA. He has done pioneering work in the areas of genetic resources conservation, including in vitor conservation; crop improvement and biotechnology of spices, and is considered as one of the topmost tissue culture scientists in the country. He is the co-editor of the international monographs. Cinnamon and Cassia the genus Cinnamomum (2004, CRC Press); Ginger the genus Zingiber (2005, CRC Press), and Turmeric the genus Curcuma (due in 2006, CRC Press). He was a recipient of the ICAR Team Award and the Jawaharlal Nehru Award. He is currently a Senior Scientist at the Indian Institute of Spices Research, Calicut, India.
