Wildlife of the Himalayas and The Terai region

Ashok S. Kothari (Editor) Boman F. Chhapgar (Editor)
Synopsis

The book contains reproductions of rare lithographs of Himalayan birds, plants and animals, selected from precious books by eminent European artists and naturalists such as John Gould, J Forbes Royle, J D Hooker, Nathaniel Wallich, E C Stuart Baker, T C Jerdon, R Lydekkar, Prater and many others. BNHS has tried to reproduce 100 to 150 years old lithographs of colourful Himalayan fauna living at high altitude among snow covered mountains. Those who have seen the lithographs feel that the plates of Tiger, Snow Leopard, Leopard Cat, Clouded Leopard and Red Panda are so natural that one feels that those animals are about to jump out from the book! The hard cover book, printed on imported art paper, have interesting articles culled from old issues of the Journal of BNHS, Journal of Darjeeling Natural History Society, Journal of Bengal Natural History Society, rare precious books in BNHS` library and the collection of Dr Ashok Kothari. The main attraction of the book is 10 double spread plates of pheasants famous for their dazzling colours. An added attraction will be Himalayan landscapes by famous artists like Major Molyneux, Col. George Strahan and Charles Inglis. The animal paintings are done by Paul Barruel, O F Tassart and K Nixon. Tassart`s painting of Gaur was later used for a postal stamp. The book is dedicated to the memory of Late Mr B G Deshmukh (former BNHS President) and Late Mr J C Daniel (former BNHS Vice-President).
