Nationalism and Women’s Movement in South India, 1917-1947

P.N. Premalatha (Author)
Synopsis Though women had contributed significantly to the social and economic progress of our nation, there has been lack of conscious effort to dig out and organize the scattered and fragmented records which speak volumes about their contributions. There is a great need to integrate women in history and include their contributions in the building of our nation. This work is an attempt in that direction. The most striking feature of this book is that it has not only explored the contributions of women for their own liberation but also to our country’s liberation. Status of women from ancient period to the early part of the twentieth century, the factors responsible for the awakening of women, their role in the freedom movement, the establishment of Women’s India Association, the first all India women’s organisation in Madras in 1917 and its works in connection with ameliorating the conditions of women are some of the important features covered in this book. This work provides a comprehensive picture regarding the status of women and women’s movement in the southern part of our country till India attained its independence.
