A Pictionary of Bulbous and Rhizomatous Garden Plants

S.L. Kochhar (Author)
Synopsis A Pictionary of Bulbous and Rhizomatous Garden Plants covers about 80 ornamental bulbous and rhizomatous plants from tropical, subtropical and temperate regions. This highly illustrated book, comprising over 150 colour pictures, is unique in its exhaustive coverage and structure. The plants are classified into two parts, viz., Part I and II; in each part the entries are arranged in alphabetical order by botanical names, providing information about the most prevalent common name together with other common names in use, the family to which it belongs, chief morphological and floral features, the nativity and their aesthetic value. The book not only provides the botanical features but also the time of sowing and flowering of each plant. It is difficult to give universally valid recommendations for agronomic and cultural practices for bulbous plants as they are grown under different ecological and economic conditions in different climatic zones. However, the general cultural practices such as soil requirements, planting time and depths; fertilizing, mulching, flowering season and storage, etc., are given for each, although it varies from region to region. The planting and flowering time given under each entry pertain to India under geographical range 8°–30°N and 68°–97.5°E, thus covering diverse climatic conditions from tropical, subtropical to the temperate. The photographs are accompanied by captions that highlight the essential features. A comprehensive glossary is given at the end to explain different bulb-growing terms.

The book will be useful to students and scholars of Botany and Horticulture, especially Floriculture as well as to researchers and specialists working at National Botanical Research Institutes, Botanical Gardens, and National Bureau and National Research Centres/Organizations. It should prove handy to professionals involved in improving the landscape architecture of our educational institutions – both schools and colleges, cities and towns, parks and gardens, public and private homes (for beautifying foyers, patios and balconies), tourist spots and hotel complexes for both indoor and outdoor use and lastly to gardening and nature enthusiasts.
