Synopsis The book is on traditional herbal medicinal plants of Manipur state where 375 species of medicinal plants are recorded. There are altogether 442 photographs showing all the species described in the book. Some of the medicinal plants, which are introduced to Manipur from other places, are also incorporated in the book to show a wider scenario. For each and every medicinal plant, the data on local names (Manipuri/Meiteilon, Hindi name and common English name) are provided along with habit, habitat and marketability. A short note on traditional mode of preparation, parts used, modes of uses and the diseases treated are enclosed at the end part of the book. The colour plates are arranged according to the sequence of families given in Bentham and Hooker’s system of classification whereas species of algae, fungi, pteridophytes and gymnosperms are given at the last part of the photograph session. The book is first of its kind in India and will be helpful for students, scholars, teachers, scientist and NGO’s and all those who are interested/working on medicinal plants. The various Government departments will also be benefited in identification of important herbal medicinal plants and its management for sustainable development.

About the authors

R.S. Singh

Dr. Ramesh Shanker Singh, Ph.D. (b. 1944) is Deputy Director and Head, Divn. of Plant Sciences and Ecology, Regional Research Laboratory (CSIR),Jorhat, Assam. He did Ph.D. in Agronomy form Agra University in 1972 & worked as a CSIR Research Fellow (1969-72) at National Botanical Research Institute, Lucknow. He started his career as Lecturer in Mahabir College Ghaziapur, UP. (1967-69). He joined RRL Jorhat in 1972 & was elevated to the rank of Scientist “F” in 1998. He has significant contributions in R & D work on high yielding varieties of medicinal and aromatic plants and also in transfer of technology to industrial concern. Under his guidance 2 scholars has already obtained Ph.D. degree. He is Executive member of many societies & active member of various professional & academic societies. He has published 85 research papers in national & international journals of repute & written chapters in a few books.

H.B. Singh

Dr. Huidrom Birkumar Singh, Ph.D. (b. 1970), has graduated in Botany honours from D.M. College of Science (1990), Manipur University, & M.Sc. Degree in Botany (plant systematic) from the University of Kurukshetra (1993). He worked on rangeland in the Sikkim Himalaya and got his Ph.D. Degree in 2001 from the University of North Bengal. His research experience includes the work done in Botanical Survey of India on ethnobotanical studies of North Eastern India (1995-96); biodiversity & ecotourism study for which he worked in G.B. Pant Institute of Himalayan Environment & Development (GBPIHED) under a sponsored program of the United States Agency for International Development (USAID), USA & subsequently with International Development Research Centre (IDRC), Canada (1996-2000). He worked for a brief period of six months in GBPIHED on biodiversity characterization through remote sensing and other GIS information under a program of the Department of Space, Govt. of India (2000). Presently, Dr. Singh is Scientist “C” & In-charge in the Regional Research Laboratory (Jorhat), Manipur Substation, Imphal. He is currently working on aromatic, medicinal & other economic plants of Manipur.

J.S. Sandhu

Dr. J.S. Sandhu, Ph.D., a fellow of National Academy is a retired Director (2002) RRL Jorhat, Assam (CSIR). A gold medallist in M.Sc. Exam for securing first class first from Punjabi University, Patiala in 1965, Dr. Sandhu obtained Ph.D. degree from the same University in 1969. He discovered one of the azlactones as the mesoinic compounds in 1971 in Punjabi University. In 1973 he joined Ranbaxy Laboratories, New Delhi as a Research Manager & associated the first ever bulk drugs production of diazepam (calmpose) & chlorodiazepoxide (Librium) & contributed for process development work of Ranodine, Gramoneg & Roscillin. Dr. Sandhu joined RRL, Jorhat in 1976 as Scientist “C” & promoted to Acting Director in 1997 & to full fledged Director in 1999. So far 18 scholars have received Ph.D. Degree under his guidance. In 1980 Dr. Sandhu visited USA & worked with Prof. E. Campaigne at Indiana University, Bloomington
