About the author

H. Y. Sharada Prasad

HY Sharada Prasad is known to the media as long-time Information Adviser to Indira Gandhi and Rajiv Gandhi. He was educated in Mysore University and jailed during the Quit India Movement. He joined the Express newspapers in 1945 and was Nieman Fellow in Journalism at Harvard University in 1955-56. He later edited Yojana, journal of the Planning Commission. Then followed his long stint in the Prime Minister's Office in 1966-78 and 1980-88. During the Janata government he worked with Morarji Desai for a few months before being posted as Director of the Indian Institute of Mass Communication. He has been Vice-President of the Indian Council for Cultural Relations since 1986, and a former Chairman of the National Institute of Design, Ahmedabed. His books include Rashtrapati Bhavan: The Story of the President’s House and Exploring Karnataka, besides a large number of translations and anthologies. He is also co-editor of the Selected Works of Jawaharlal Nehru. Among the honours he has received are Padma Bhushan and the Indira Gandhi Award for National Integration.
